Today we looped south through Greece, passed through Athens, and then started heading back north. We travelled 226.00 km together and arrived in Istiaia, Greece. Istiaia is a town in central Greece, which was the capital of the Itiaia Province until the province was abolished in 2006.

Aliartos is a town in southern Greece which is the site of the Tower of Aliartos – a medieval tower built on a cliff, which is also surrounded by several caves which may be from medieval times as well, or were created later.

Today we set off an walked through Albania (home of over 130 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners) and arrived in Greece (home of over 15,100 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners). Our walk today took us 262.00 km and we arrived in Kastoria, Greece. Kastoria is a city in northwest Greece and is located in a valley between limestone mountains.

  • Montenegro, home to over 1,400 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners

Our walk today wrapped up in Podgorica, Montenegro which is the nation’s capital and formerly known as Titograd between 1946 and 1992 when Montenegro was a part of Yugoslavia.

Day 178

Today we took a long walk through Italy, passed through San Marino (home to over 100 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners), and arrived in Austria, home to over 4,100 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners. Our walk took us 1,030.25 km together and we arrived in Klagenfurt, Austria. Klagenfurt is a city in southern Austria which translates to ford of lament, thought to be in reference to the legend of fairies and demons that lived in the nearby swamp.

Today we ventured further north through Italy, walking along the west coast. We walked 291.50 km together and we arrived in Acciaroli, Italy. Acciaroli is a hamlet on the coast of Tyrrhenian Sea and is a part of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.

Today we set off from Tunis and took a virtual ferry ride to Malta (home to over 2,600 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners) and then took another virtual ferry ride to Sicily. We walked 245.75 km back into Italy and arrived in Scilla, Italy. Scilla gets its name from Scylla, the six dog-headed monster from Greek mythology who was said to live on the rock of Scilla.

Today we headed out of Libya and arrived in Tunisia, home to over 6,200 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners. Our walk took us 520.25 km and we arrived in Medenine, Tunisia. Medenine is a town in south eastern Tunisia and is recognizable as the filming location for many of the desert town scenes filmed for Star Wars:  Episode I – The Phantom Menace.
