After another 418.50 km walked today, we have now reached the city of Escárcega, Mexico in southern Mexico. Escárcega saw a lot of growth in the 20th century thanks to roads and railway development, and was named after Francisco Escárcega, a native of the region who oversaw much of the railway construction in southeast Mexico.

Day 72

Our walk today stretched 537.25 km and we arrived in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Coatzacoalcos is a port city on the Gulf of Mexico, which is important in the export of products out of Mexico, including oil, forestry and manufactured products.

Day 71

Our walk today took us 503.75 km today, which puts us in Mexico City, Mexico! Mexico City is the capital city of Mexico, and – first founded in 1325 – it is the oldest capital city in all of the Americas!

Day 70

Today we continued our way through Mexico and arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico – we walked 656.75 km together today! Guadelajara is the second largest city in Mexico, and is home to San Juan de Dios Market – the largest indoor market in Latin America – and the Guadelajara International Book Fair – the largest book fair in the Americas!

Day 69

Today we continued south through Mexico, travelling along the coast of the Gulf of California. We made our way 667.25 km together today, and arrived in Culiacán, Mexico. Culiacán was first founded in 1531 and is most populous city in the state of Sinaloa!

Day 68

Setting off from Buckeye, Arizona, we wrapped up our walk through the United States – heading past the Special Olympics Arizona office in Phoenix, then through Tucson. We then began our walk through Mexico, home to 38,600 Special Olympics athletes! Our walk today totaled 613.00 km and we reached the city of Hermosillo, Mexico – in June 2019, Hermosillo was the hottest city on the planet, with temperatures of over 48 degrees celsius!

Day 67

After leaving Long Beach, we passed through San Diego before returning to Arizona for our final state visit on our walk through the US! Today we made it 647.50 km together, and reached the city of Buckeye, Arizona. Buckeye is about 48 km west of Phoenix (our first destination tomorrow), and in 2017 and 2018 was the fastest growing city in the United States!

Day 66

Today we wrapped up our walk through Nevada, heading through Reno before crossing over into California! We walked through several cities in California today, including Sacramento, Pleasant Hill (home of Special Olympics Northern California), San Francisco,  San Jose and Los Angeles. It was a busy day walking 1,204.00 km together, but we wrapped up our day’s walk in Long Beach, California. Long Beach is home to Special Olympics Southern California, and is one of the “most walkable cities in the United States”!

Day 65

Today we set out north through Nevada from Las Vegas. Our walk took us 490.25 km together, bringing us to the town of Hawthorne, Nevada. Hawthorne was first settled back in 1880, and is close to Walker Lake and the summit of Mt. Grant which reaches 11,239 feet!

Today we wrapped up or walk through Arizona and arrived in Nevada! Today was a shorter walk, travelling 386.25 km together, and we arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada! Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is annually ranked as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world!
