Day 43

After heading further north and passing through Green Bay, Wisconsin, we returned to the state of Michigan. Our walk took us 672.75 km and we arrived in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Sault Ste. Marie is located on the Canada-USA Border and is just across the St. Marys River from its twin city, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Day 42

Today we made it into Illinois and passed through Chicago! We walked past Soldier Field, site of the first Special Olympics Games in 1968! From there, we headed to Lombard and Rolling Meadows – both just outside of Chicago – where we passed by the Gallagher Head Office (proud supporter of Special Olympics) and the Special Olympics Illinois Head Office respectively. Walking further north, we stopped for the day after walking 476.25 km in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is home to the Special Olympics Wisconsin head office, and is situated on what is called an isthmus (a narrow piece of land connected two larger areas across water) and land surrounding four different lakes.

Day 41

Today we set off from Cincinnati and entered the state of Indiana! We dropped by the head office of Finish Line, another proud supporter of Special Olympics, in Indianapolis, before heading north. We arrived in Detroit, Michigan, just across the Canada-US border from Windsor – hard to believe it was just 18 days ago that we walked through Windsor, Ontario and have walked over 20,000 km since then! It was then further north to Mount Pleasant, Michigan – home of Special Olympics Michigan head office – before back south where we ended our day’s walk in Kalamazoo, Michigan! Our day’s walk totaled 1,043.75 km – one of Kalamazoo’s notable sites is an outdoor pedestrian shopping mall called the Kalamazoo Mall!

Day 40

Today we traveled through West Virginia and returned to Pennsylvania, passing through Pittsburgh. We then crossed into Ohio and walked through Columbus before ending our day in Cincinnati, Ohio. We walked a total of 742.50 km together today and visited some more great sponsors of Special Olympics along the way, including Aerie in Pittsburgh and P&G in Cincinnati! Did you know that Cincinnati was the first US city founded after the American Revolution as well as the first major inland city in the country?

Day 39

Today we set off from Nashville and made our way through Kentucky, passing through Louisville and Frankfort – home of the Special Olympics Kentucky head office! We then reached West Virginia, where we ended our 617.75 km day in Hurricane, West Virginia. Hurricane received its name when a party of surveyors that had been commissioned by George Washington noted that the site appeared to have been struck by a hurricane. Interestingly there is also a post office not far from Hurricane that is named Tornado. Hurricane is also home to the Special Olympics West Virginia head office!

Day 38

Today we set off from Memphis, heading south into the state of Mississippi. We passed through Montgomery – past the Special Olympics Mississippi office – then returned to Alabama through Montgomery, and visited the Special Olympics Alabama office. It was then back into Georgia where we walked through Atlanta and passed the Coca-Cola headquarters, before heading to Norcross, Georgia and the Special Olympics office there. We then crossed the state border back into Tennessee where we ended our day after 1,348.25 km in Nashville, Tennessee; the Music City! Nashville is also home to the Special Olympics Tennessee head office, meaning that we visited the office of four different Special Olympics chapters today!

Day 37

After heading north through Louisiana, we walked through Arkansas today, passing by the Special Olympics Arkansas office in North Little Rock. From there, we walked east and entered the state of Tennessee. We walked a total of 667.50 km together today, and arrived in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is the largest city along the Mississippi River, and is home to the annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest!

Day 36

Our travels today took us into Louisiana, where we passed through New Orleans, Covington (home of Special Olympics Louisiana’s head office) and Baton Rouge. After a shorter walking day of 716.25 km we arrived in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Natchitoches is home to the oldest general store in Louisiana; the Kaffie-Fredrick Inc. General Mercantile which was found in 1863 and is still in operation to this day!

Day 35

Today we continued our walk north along the Gulf Coast, passing through Tampa. We then headed back towards Orlando and arrived at Clermont, home of the Special Olympics Florida’s head office. From there it was back north to Tallahassee, before crossing the border into Alabama, where we ended the day in Mobile, Alabama, the only salt-water port in the state of Alabama. We walked 1,108.25 km today, which puts our total distance over 40,000 km to date!

Day 34

Today we set off from Savannah, Georgia and quickly crossed the state border into Florida. We walked through Jacksonville, Florida – the most populated city in Florida and largest city by area in the contiguous United States. We then walked down to Orlando, Florida, which is set to host the Special Olympics USA Games in June 2022 (just 709 days away!).

From Orlando, we headed towards the Atlantic coastline and south where we reached Miami. We then trekked west through the Everglades towards the Gulf Coast. We ended off our day walking 1,070.00 km total, and ended up in Fort Myers, Florida – of all the cities in Florida, Fort Myers has (on average) the most days of sun per year!
